Late To The Parade March 12, 2010 Dave and Joe (Toronto, Ontario) This book sat on my dresser for months and months. I couldn't pick it up because I'd heard too many good reviews, too much praise. I knew the heartbreaking story of the author's death and the drama surrounding the manuscripts arrival at the publishers death. I felt all this outside drama inflated the estimation of what was inside the book. If you, like me, are hesitant for that reason ... fear not. I picked the book up because I had nothing else to read and was immediately pulled into a wonderful set of stories. I could not believe how wonderfully written the book was, it was easy to read even if sometimes the images were difficult to digest. I liked the fact that, like life, the story has layers. This book deserves it's readership. Pick it up off the dresser and give it a shot.
Good but not Great February 8, 2010 Benjamin Cummins (Iroquois ON, Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As much as I enjoyed parts of this book there were a few things that really bugged me. One, the author has a great need to insert brand names into his story, I am assuming brands he likes or supports, so laptops are called iBooks, scanners are Minolta scanners, he even goes as far as to plug a freeware word processing program he likes, being thoughtful enough to insert the download link. The writing is wooden and switches back and forth between American and British terms, but I am ready to blame this on the translator, for instance why would someone in Sweden be reading temperature in Farenheit and then call their gasoline petrol? There are two main stories here, and I found myself really caught up in the mystery of Harriet Vanger but not so much Milenium Magazine thread, so when one ended with a good chunk of the book left I dreaded the last 100 pages.
While the author has mighty axes to grind he avoids being too preachy a la Dan Brown, so overall this is pretty good thriller/suspense novels though definetly not completely satisfying.
Great Start to a Trilogy January 21, 2010 Sumit Sharma (Toronto, Canada) Awesome read = Fun and thrilling....In my view you would have to give it some time (at least 50-60 pages) to get used the swedish names (unless you are swedish of course)...but once you get used to the reading what unveils is a great murder mystery with some well defined characters....Salander is awesome....too bad we will not get more of Larson due to his untimely death...RIP
Do give this book a try....I guarantee you will read the 2nd and the 3rd..
Cheers!
Amazing January 11, 2010 Ronchi1950 (North York, Ontario Canada) Even though I am an avid reader this is my first review on Amazon. I had to write about this trilogy. I found this book by accident on the internet, ordered it for my digital reader and fell in love. The book is intelligently written and the charachters are unusual. This is not your average mystery, it is way more than that. It is about people and how cruel some can be and how others become stronger. Salander is amazing and a genius. I applauded her for everything. The only person she could always count on was herself and she did whatever she needed to do to survive against political powers.
Read the second book and ordered the third one from Amazon.UK, couldn't wait for June 2010. They were fabulous as well. Just sorry that we will not see Salander again.
Lost in Translation January 5, 2010 Readalot (Toronto, Ontario Canada) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't for the life of me get what other people are raving about with this book. All I can say is that I was extremely disappointed, considering how well readers on this site rated it. Perhaps something was lost in the translation..I don't know, but I struggled to finish it, hated how anti-climatic it was and have no intention of reading the next two.
The writing was blase and bluntly matter of fact. The characters were one dimensional and other than Salander, I disliked them all. There was absolutely no emotion in the author's writing - I felt like I was reading a grocery list of facts. Even the characters' apparent moments of angst and fury read point of fact. Sadly I did not feel *anything* reading this whatsoever, well, other than complete disappointment and boredom, that is.
